Volunteer with Maidenhead Scouts
Thank you for looking at our web site and our volunteer page.
In Maidenhead, Scouting is thriving and our numbers are steadily increasing.
Each week around 1000 young people aged 4 to 18 years meet in Maidenhead and surrounding villages to participate in a variety of activities having fun and making friends.
Our Leaders, in partnership with our young people, create challenging and creative activities, encouraging them to achieve new skills and abilities in a caring environment.

Scouting offers you the opportunities for adventure, to participate, try new activities and to learn new skills for life.
We offer full training suitable for each age range and role.
Do you have a skill we could utilise?
We also have a variety of background roles which are equally essential and play an important part in assisting the smooth running of our district and scout groups.
Managerial and support roles include: Chair person of executive groups, secretaries, treasurers and committee members. These people act as our charity trustees and who help and manage our scout buildings, look after finances, help raise funds and apply for grants, take on project work such as sourcing new equipment.
Volunteering is so rewarding, being able to put something back into the community and also great for your CV.

Your Questions Answered
What will I get out of volunteering?
As well as gaining externally recognised skills and having a brilliant time, Scouting also offers the chance to build on personal skills, like teamwork, confidence and leadership. A study found that over 90% of our volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.
What do Scouts do?
That’s a really, really long list. To whet you appetite though: Games, Visits, Walks and Hikes, Camping, Archery, Abseiling, Cooking, Quizzes, Craft, Exploring Outdoors, Going Abroad, Competitions, Canoeing, DofE, Swimming
Is there anything you don’t do?
Not really, virtually nothing is banned and the only limits are your own imagination.
Do I really have the skills you need?
You don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls (our Chief Scout) to get involved with Scouting. Do you have first aid knowledge? Are you good with numbers? Handy in the kitchen? Or are you a DIY whizz? We all have useful skills and you can volunteer and help in many ways.
Can I choose which age group I work with?
Yes, you could choose to work with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers and indeed you may prefer to work primarily with adults in a management or ‘back office’ type role.
Will I be thrown in the deep end?
Absolutely not. We will place you in situation with existing experienced teams to learn the ropes and who will be able to support you well.
Don’t I have to be an outdoors type?
No, not really. You could help us in a more ‘back office’ type role, supporting us behind the scenes.
Do I have to undertake training?
Yes, there is a straightforward online induction to bring you up to speed on modern day Scouting. Following that you will be assigned a personal training mentor who will guide your development.
How long does the full training take?
You can spread your initial training over 3 years to fit around other commitments and availability. Not all roles require the same level of training. For example helping on a Parent Support Group would require no additional training.
What other training is there?
You will need to do child safeguarding and 1st aid training.
If you do training at work, we will recognise and make use of it.
Training is at a level and appropriate for the role you perform.
Do I have to go camping?
Camping is obviously a massive part of Scouting, but no, it isn’t a requirement.
I’m really quite shy and not sure I could do this?
Don’t worry, we are really friendly and will go to any lengths to make you feel welcomed, valued and included.
What is the time commitment?
1 hour a week more or less, you decide.
What if I don’t have that much spare time?
Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we’ll make sure you’re properly trained and supported.
What’s the pay like?
We are all volunteers. The payback is smiles, laughter, fun, adventure and a general sense of well being. We will of course pay any out of pocket expenses.

Actually young people today are really just like you and I were back then. Well behaved, exciting and energetic, full of hope, and making all the same mistakes and learning.

No, we welcome people from all backgrounds and faiths, or no faith. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and tolerant.
